Why Medical Cannabis? How does it work?
Cannabis is a plant, with origins tracing back to more than 60,000 years ago. It contains many different compounds which are known as cannabinoids. The combinations and proportions of these can differ widely depending on the strain of cannabis plant and how the drug has been prepared. The use and acceptance of medicinal cannabis continues to evolve, although many controversies still surround legal, ethical and social implications associated with it.
Components that have attracted considerable attention are cannabidiol (CBD), the major non-psychotropic compound, and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), but there is much more to this plant than those two cannabinoids. The cannabis plant produces over 100 different types of cannabinoids which act on the cannabinoid receptors of human cells, known as the Endocannabinoid System – a neuromodulatory system responsible for homeostatic regulation.
